Do You Have to Refrigerate Kombucha?

do you have to refrigerate kombucha

While some people may argue that kombucha need to be refrigerated doesn’t need to be refrigerated and that it can be left on the counter for short periods of time, it is important to note that most commercially-produced kombucha is pasteurized, which destroys the beneficial bacteria, organic acids, enzymes and sugar content. Therefore, it is best to consume kombucha within the recommended timeframe or as directed by the label.

If you leave kombucha out for too long, it can start to ferment and develop an unpleasant vinegar-like flavour or extra fizz. If this happens, it is a sign that you have over-fermented your kombucha and that it is no longer safe to drink.

To Shake or Not to Shake: The Great Kombucha Dilemma Unveiled

The same goes for hard kombucha, which has a higher alcohol content and requires a longer fermentation process to convert the sugar into alcohol. This increased alcohol content acts as a natural preservative, preventing over-fermentation and spoilage of the drink.

When consuming kombucha, it is also a good idea to choose brands that contain the lowest amount of sugar per serving. This is because many kombucha brands have high amounts of added sugar that can cause over-fermentation and affect our health in the long run by increasing weight gain, blood sugar levels and triglyceride levels. Ideally, look for brands that have under 4 grams of sugar per serving.
