Scarlet Fever
Scarlet fever is caused by group A streptococci bacteria — the same type of germs that cause strep throat, impetigo and wound infections. Signs and symptoms of infection typically appear 1 to 3 days after exposure to the bacteria, and include a red sore throat, swollen neck glands and fever. A fine, red, sandpaper-like rash develops 12 to 48 hours after the first signs and symptoms appear and may spread to the arms and back. The strep bacteria that cause scarlet fever release special chemicals that attack and destroy the body’s tissues. This can lead to a painful sore throat and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, jaw or armpits. A strep throat usually lasts about 24 to 72 hours, and most people recover in about a week with antibiotic treatment. Untreated strep throat can result in serious complications, including rheumatic fever (joint pain and swelling, heart damage) and pneumonia.

Infections caused by group A streptococci usually are diagnosed with a rapid strep test, which can detect the bacteria in the throat within about 24 hours. A throat culture swab can also be done, but is usually not necessary in adults. Infections in children and teens should be treated with a throat culture if a rapid strep test is negative, because these people are at greater risk for developing rheumatic fever from an untreated scarlet fever infection.
