The Benefits of a Tree Health Assessment
A Tree health assessment is a detailed evaluation conducted by an ISA Certified Arborist to determine the overall condition of a tree. The inspection includes a visual examination of the trunk, branches, and leaves to identify problems that may be present. The assessment also examines the soil quality to ensure that the roots have an optimum environment in which to grow.
Regular inspections by a qualified arborist help to keep trees healthy and extend their life expectancy. Observing the basic signs of declining health like fungal fruiting bodies, insect pests, carpenter ants, and cavities can help to identify issues before they turn into more serious problems. A yearly inspection is recommended by most arborists.
When a tree becomes unhealthy it is not only an unsightly safety hazard but can negatively impact the property value of the home and surrounding landscapes. Proper diagnosis and treatment of the problem can save you money in the long run by preventing the need for more costly control measures or removals.
Tree Health Assessment: Spotting Problems Before It’s Too Late
A good rule of thumb is to always look up! This is the best way to see a potential problem in its early stages. Watch out for bare branches that do not put on new growth each year, as this is an indication of a stress tree. Other signs to note include a yellowing (chlorotic) leaf colour, and a general poor canopy structure. Look for the presence of fungi such as Meripilus giganteus (the gill-like fungus that affects beech trees) which can be identified by the mat of white fungal mycelium, black rhizomorphs under the bark and honey-coloured toadstools on the ground from June to September.
