The Benefits of Attic Insulation
Whether you are a home energy spray foam insulation enthusiast or simply seeking to lower your utility bills, attic insulation is one of the most important upgrades you can make. Proper attic insulation reduces energy consumption and provides a more comfortable living environment. It also protects the roof and attic from moisture and pests, extending the life of both.
Insulation consists of a range of materials that are rated according to their R-value, with higher ratings indicating greater insulating power. The Department of Energy recommends that homes in warm climates have an R-30 rating or higher, while those in colder climates should have an R-49 rating or higher.
The Benefits of Spray Foam for Attic Insulation
The most common and affordable form of attic insulation is fiberglass batts, which are made from glass fibers woven together with cotton batting. Fiberglass can provide a high R-value per inch, but it can also be susceptible to fire damage, which can be costly and dangerous. This type of insulation is also harmed by moisture, so it must be installed properly and may need to be replaced once wet.
Blown-in cellulose is another attic insulation option. It is made from recycled paper, cardboard and other materials and treated with boric acid and other substances for flame resistance before it is blown into attics. This type of insulation is less expensive than other options, and it is more environmentally friendly. Foam board is more expensive, but it offers superior thermal resistance and acts as an air barrier, sealing gaps and cracks. It must be installed by professionals due to the chemicals involved in the production process.
